Alewives Class Offerings January - March 2009


HOW DO I SIGN UP?

To sign up for a class, either call us at 207-563-5002 or stop by the shop in person. 
PAYMENT IS REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION. 

In order to reserve your space in a class, we must first receive your class payment. You may pay us in person at the shop, call us with a credit card number or mail us a check. Once we have received your payment, you will be given a materials list for your class. Our classroom can only accommodate up to 8 people, so it is advisable to sign up as early as possible. In the event that you are unable to attend your class, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may notify the next person on the waiting list. In the event that we cancel a class, you will be notified of the
cancellation as soon as possible and issued a full refund or a store credit.

Perfect for the beginning sewer. Go home with a finished bag and the confidence and skills to make many, many more. A great first project, particularly for younger gals who are fans of the “big bag” look.
We have kits available and many finished samples.

Miranda Day Bag

$30, plus materials
Best suited for intermediate sewers. The Miranda Day bag is a medium
sized tote that is great for carrying around town and uses your favorite
combination of fabrics. The bag also uses our new leather tote handles,
available in a wide range of colors. So nice, you’ll want to make it twice!

No sewing or previous experience required. This class is suited to any skill level. Using fabric, acrylic gloss and canvas, students in this class will make and finish their very own fabric floorcloth. With plenty of time to make and give away extra floorcloths for the Holidays, you’ll never
look at fabric the same way again! Complete kits available at the shop.

Braided Rag Rug

No sewing or previous experience required. This class is suited to any
skill level. In this workshop, designed to help eat up your scraps, students will learn how to make a braided rag rug on a 2’x3’ frame. Frames are available for students to purchase at the shop or make and bring your own. Highly fun, efficient and addictive!

Have you gotten your FREE vinyl grocery tote pattern yet? These tylish
little numbers are easy to stitch together, help to cut down on your use
of plastic bags and ALMOST make you want to go grocery shopping. Just stop by the shop to pick up your complimentary copy.

OLIVER+S TRUNK SHOW AND SALE!!!
From January 5 through 19, Alewives will be hosting the Oliver+S children’s clothing trunk show. During this time, the entire line of Oliver+S patterns will be on sale at 20% off, along with a selection of fabrics that would make great children’s clothing. Head on into the shop to see these cute clothes and to get a great deal, too!!!

Making History

This class, best suited to intermediate sewers, really is “making history,” as it’s probably the most traditional quilt we have ever taught. But a traditional
quilt pattern rendered in today’s contemporary fabrics makes for a very
dynamic result. Come see the sample quilt at the store!

Bali Bowls

Saturdays, January 31, February 7
& 14, 1:00-3:30
$45, plus materials
Best suited to intermediate sewers, in this class students will cover cotton
clothesline with bali batik strips to make beautiful color-washed bowls. A
diverse way to use fabrics, especially our new Batik Jelly Rolls or use fabrics from your stash. ***Please be aware that this class requires you to bring your own machine that you are familiar with, in good working condition, with a walking foot.***

Amy Butler’s Weekender Bag
With Rina Ripley

Mondays, February 2, 9,16, & 22
9:30-12:00
$60, plus materials
Best suited for intermediate sewers. Students will go home with a finished
bag, perfect for a carry-on, a short trip, or over-sized every day bag. Skills
learned include making and inserting bias-covered piping and inserting
zippers. ***This class requires you to bring your own machine that you are
familiar with, in good working condition, with a walking foot and a zipper
foot. There will also be some homework required.***

Turning Twenty
With Rhea Daiute

Sundays, February 15, 22, March 1
& 8 , 1:00-3:30
$60, plus materials
Perfect for beginners. Take 20 “Fat Quarters” and turn them into a fullsized
quilt. Students will learn rotary cutting, chain-sewing, machine piecing and leave with a finished quilt top. Plenty of kits and finished samples
available at the shop. Fun, inspiring and a great first project... Sooner or
later, EVERYBODY “Turns Twenty!”

Insomnia

Saturdays, February 28, March 7,
14 & 21, 1:00-3:30
$60, plus materials
From the book “Strip Therapy,” the Insomnia quilt uses Bali batik Jelly Rolls (or any other kind of Jelly Roll) and stitches up into a colorful, quick and easy throw-sized quilt top. Perfectly suited to beginners or intermediate sewers.

Crocheted Round Rug
With Maylene Mitchell

Saturday, March 21, 10:00-12:30
$15, plus materials
No sewing or previous experience required. This class is suited to any skill
level. Students will learn how to cut and join continuous fabric strips and
how to crochet and chain fabrics into a round rug. Pre-cut batik “ribbon,”
perfect for this project, is available at the shop in a wide selection of colors.

FREE SEWING LOUNGE

Sewing Lounge
with Rhea Daiute
Every Friday night
from 4:00-8:30pm
Sewing Lounge is a perfect time to get caught up on old projects, browse fabrics for a new project, or to get a little extra help. During this time, an instructor will always be available to answer your questions and our tools, such as rotary cutters, mats, rulers, irons, even sewing machines, are available for you to use. Bring food, bring a friend, make new friends, have a great time. There is a whole community of sewing gals out there waiting to meet you!!!

PRIVATE LESSONS - Available at any time!

Cost: $15 per hour, plus materials
For those of you who want the most for your money! We are now offering private lessons at an hourly rate, during which time you can work on the project of your choice. Even if you don't have a specific idea in mind, we can help you choose an introductory project. This is an excellent way for beginners (children, teens or adults) to learn quilting or sewing.
